HOSPICE PHARMD AWARDED 1ST PLACE
The University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences recently held its 6th Annual Residency Project Presentation Day. Over six post-graduate pharmacy residency programs from Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Northwest Pennsylvania were invited to have their 22 residents present projects to an audience of UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences faculty, residency program directors and fellow residents.

Shelley Wilson, PharmD, was awarded First Place for her presentation of the “Impact of Pharmacist Intervention on Clinical Outcomes in the Palliative Care Setting”. This year-long project measured how well Niagara Hospice pharmacist recommendations on medication use are accepted by physicians and how well patient symptoms are controlled because of the recommendations. Her findings showed that approximately 90% of Niagara Hospice pharmacist recommendations are accepted by physicians. The study also proved that when the pharmacist recommendations were used, patient symptoms were more likely to be resolved.

Dr. Wilson is a 2009 graduate of UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and she is the Pharmacy Resident at Niagara Hospice in Niagara County, New York. Dr. Wilson not only did an outstanding job presenting the often complex research data and findings, but addressed pointed questions from the audience in a sophisticated and confident manner.

Each year, Niagara Hospice provides a one year residency to a doctor of pharmacy. The Pharmacy Practice Residency Program is a joint collaboration of Niagara Hospice and the University at Buffalo’s School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences to provide a post-doctoral pharmacist residency. The partnership is instrumental in offering patients the unique type of comfort and care that characterizes Niagara Hospice. Under the agreement, Niagara Hospice provides a residency to a pharmacist who performs research and supervises UB pharmacy students during clinical rotations at its facility on Sunset Drive in the Town of Lockport.

The Niagara Hospice Pharmacy Practice Residency Program received Accreditation in 2005 from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

Dr. Wahler recently received the Western New York Residency Preceptor Award at a ceremony held by the University at Buffalo. The award recognizes a residency preceptor who has demonstrated excellence in the training of pharmacy residents in the areas of clinical practice, teaching, and/or research.
