CROSS-COUNTRY TREK BENEFITS HOSPICES
On September 13, 2009 Dr. Colin Skinner of Great Britain arrived in Niagara County during his fifth long distance walk to raise money and awareness for hospices in the U.S. and Canada. Skinner’s last visit to Niagara County was 21 years ago when Niagara Hospice was serving its first patients.

During his 6,000 mile walk from the Kennedy Airport in New York City to Minot, North Dakota he has already spoken with many hospice workers, volunteers and patients as well as strangers in the community – many he now calls friends. While at Niagara Hospice on September 14th he shared stories from recent voyages during a breakfast reception with staff and volunteers, and during an Open House at Niagara Hospice House that was open to the community. During his presentation to Niagara Hospice staff and volunteers Colin said, “Hospices help people dealing with serious illness, but hospices need help too.” He hopes his journey will inspire others to donate or volunteer at their local hospice. Colin also took time to visit with Hospice House patients, stating that meeting hospice patients help motivate him to continue his journey. “Seeing the good that they’re doing,” he said, “That’s what keeps me walking.”

His book, Beyond the Setting Sun, journals his first North American trek 21 years ago when he first met Niagara Hospice co-founder and board member Patricia Evans. Pat and her husband Rich served as hosts to Colin during this trip by opening their home to him and showing him some of the local sights.

Colin’s book can be purchased on-line at www.amazon.co.uk. The book and Dr. Skinner are emotionally moving and motivating towards giving to hospice and advocating for learning more about hospice services. Colin says the purpose of his journey is not only to raise money for hospices around the globe but also to educate those he encounters and make them aware of the services hospice can provide.
