NCHPP NAMES WAHLER AS SECTION LEADER
(Niagara County, NY) – The National Council of Hospice and Palliative Professionals (NCHPP) recently named Niagara Hospice pharmacy consultant, Robert G. Wahler, PharmD as Pharmacy Section leader. Dr. Wahler is a UB clinical assistant professor of pharmacy and the Niagara Hospice pharmacy practice residency director. Through his service to this National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) council, he will serve as a national leader in the field of pharmacy.

Dr. Wahler was elected as the Pharmacist Section Leader by his peers on the steering committee and by the NHPCO staff. The Pharmacist Section is one of several sections representing all aspects of the interdisciplinary team in the NCHPP which represents the membership of NHPCO. As Section Leader, Dr. Wahler will sit on the NCHPP executive committee and be responsible for representing the hospice and palliative care pharmacy profession and membership to NCHPP and NHPCO.

Dr. Wahler says, “Relief of symptoms is often accomplished using medications, yet not all hospices fully utilize a pharmacist as a resource.” Explaining further, he states: “The potential for pharmacist participation in the interdisciplinary care of hospice patients is immense. I hope to combine our experience with pharmacy practice and education at Niagara Hospice and the UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences to further pharmacist participation on a national level in the care of Hospice patients.”

Niagara Hospice president and CEO, John Lomeo said: “Bob has been an instrumental member of the Niagara Hospice team by providing education to our staff that has effectively help ease pain and other symptoms in our patients as well as save the agency dollars due to his expertise.” Lomeo stated further: “With Bob’s leadership, Niagara Hospice obtained accreditation for our residency program in pharmacy practice, with emphasis in home care, from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. As Pharmacy Section leader he will be a strong advocate for the advancement of pharmacy practice in the care of hospice patients.” At the time of accreditation, the Niagara Hospice pharmacy practice residency program was the only nationally accredited residency based in a hospice, furthering Niagara Hospice’s conscious effort to be a teaching hospice. The program is a joint collaboration of Niagara Hospice and the University at Buffalo’s School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences to provide a post-doctoral pharmacist residency.

NCHPP is the individual membership branch of NHPCO. The branch provides an important forum for discipline-specific and interdisciplinary connection and collaboration. Membership is free to employees and volunteers of NHPCO provider members such as Niagara Hospice. Through NCHPP, all professionals and active volunteers in the hospice and palliative care community avail themselves to opportunities for learning, networking and leadership in the field of hospice and palliative care.

Since serving its first patient in 1988, Niagara Hospice has served over 14,000 individuals as well as their immediate and extended families. Hospice is specialized care for the terminally ill that includes physical, emotional, spiritual and bereavement care for families. Hospice care is appropriate for any advanced stage illness, not just cancer, where the prognosis is a life expectancy of approximately six months or less.
