IMITATION ISN'T ALWAYS THE SINCEREST FORM...

IMITATION ISN'T ALWAYS THE SINCEREST FORM OF FLATTERY
by John Lomeo, Niagara Hospice President & CEO

Since 1988, Niagara Hospice has led the cause to provide comprehensive end of life services to patients and families. It is only logical that recently other health care providers are trying to imitate the services of Niagara Hospice. But can they really?
There are many new buzz words and phrases being promoted in healthcare, all trying to legitimize their service using hospice’s name and reputation. If you ever heard the terms comfort care, advance care planning or end-of-life care related to a terminal illness, you should know that these are services trying to convince you that they provide the same care as hospice care. Nothing can be further from the truth.

As the only hospice provider in Niagara County, I truly believe our services are unmatched by any other provider. The unfortunate fact is that when people hear the word “hospice” it often evokes fear and apprehension. The word “hospice” is first defined in the dictionary as: a house of shelter or rest for pilgrims, strangers, etc. If you have ever experienced hospice care as my family has, you know this to be true. On this journey, make no mistake, accept no substitutions and get your facts straight about the differences between hospice care and the rest.

The core difference is that Niagara Hospice cares for the entire family, not just the patient. The “look-a-likes,” which I like to call them, focus on the medical needs of the patient. While this is an important aspect of hospice care there is much more to the story.

It’s also important to note that anyone can make a referral to Hospice, even you. If you are ever faced with an end of life illness in your family, I urge you to consider all your options. Call Niagara Hospice at 439-4417, even if it is just for information. We will give you straight answers that can make all the difference for you and your family.

Last year over 900 families chose Niagara Hospice for the compassionate care of their loved one. Hospice workers consider it a privilege to guide families on this journey. We are confident that once you know all the facts you will make the best choice for you and your family- Niagara Hospice.
